Process
A night begins days earlier.
The visible part of an event lasts a few hours. This page is about the part you do not see: measuring, calculating, towers, cable and the strike. The frame beside each step is from a morning when that step was actually done.
-
01 · Site survey and load calculation
We go to the venue. Floor, height, power capacity and vehicle access are measured. The truss span and the weight of everything to be hung are calculated; no quote is written before that. Grass, a terrace and a sports hall are three different floors, and each answers a load differently.
-
02 · Build plan
Which crew is on site at what hour, which truck comes in where, when the tower goes up, when the strike ends: one schedule. The venue manager gets the same schedule; there are no surprises.
-
03 · On-site build
The tower is raised by hand on the grass, the deck is set on its frame, the hedge wall closes the site, moving lights are hung on the truss from a ladder, the sound line is run. Every finished section is tested.
-
04 · The event
Our crew sits at the lighting and sound desk for the whole programme. Cues for the ceremony, the speeches, the iftar, the show and the dancing are written in advance; the run-of-show follows protocol time. The second the lights dim is the second written on the morning schedule.
-
05 · Strike
Everything we built is taken down by the same crew, the flight cases close, the venue is handed back the way we received it. The strike is part of the job; it is not handed to anyone else.
